Indian wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Group is to launch its latest 6MW offshore wind turbine. The Indian firm will launch the REpower 6.2M152 wind turbine at the EWEA Offshore conference and exhibition this month. The offshore wind turbine will enter commercial production in 2015.

The REpower 6.2M152 wind turbine features a rotor diameter of 152m and will be constructed offshore at a height of between 95m and 110m. The offshore wind turbine can increase energy output by 20 per cent at wind speeds of 9.5m/s, compared with energy generated by REpower 6.2M126, which featured a rotor diameter of 126m. Each REpower 6.2M152 offshore wind turbine with rated power of 6.15MW can supply electricity to around 4,000 homes.

German-based REpower Systems, part of the Suzlon Group, has already sold the offshore wind prototype REpower 6.2M152. The company will construct the prototype with a hub height of 124m at an onshore site in northern Germany, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014.

Andreas Nauen, CEO of REpower Systems SE, said: “We are the only manufacturer to have already installed more than 100 offshore wind turbines in the multi-megawatt class. With an eye on the outstanding availability and energy yield of the REpower 6.2M126, we have enhanced this robust, proven concept: the bigger rotor and correspondingly larger drivetrain of Repower 6.2M152 combined with tried-and-tested, first-class technology enables our customers to generate energy even more cost-efficiently on the high seas.”
