Chinese firm Longyuan Power has started to install turbines for a 100MW wind farm in Canada - the company’s first overseas wind energy project. The turbine has been installed at the 100MW wind farm in Dufferin County, Canada, which is the first wind energy project for Longyuan Power outside of China.

The wind farm is being built in Merlin Eriksson Town in Canada’s Ontario province. It has a total installed capacity of 100MW with 49 generating sets. The wind energy project will have a 20-year preferential tariff, which has been granted by local government.

There are around 200 people across eight teams working on the wind energy project site each day to carry out infrastructure work, the company said.

Longyuan Power, which describes itself as China’s largest wind power producer, said it has had to work through difficult winter weather conditions to complete the installation, but has established a management system to make sure the project is constructed to a high standard and in good time.

The company said: “Longyuan has actively coped with various difficulties, established the ‘trinity’ management system, and developed detailed regulations, such as quality control, safety management and schedule control to ensure project construction quality and speed.”

Under the “vigorous” guidance and support of China Guodian Corporation, Longyuan Power said developing the wind power project has been tough and the company has had to make meticulous preparations for its construction. The project has also had to pass more than two years of strict approval procedures. These have been set by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Ontario Ministry of Environment and other government departments in Ontario. But work on constructing the wind farm is now gradually progressing.

“Engineering construction is progressing steadily, Longyuan Power said.

Longyuan Power is the latest company from a BRIC country to be involved in wind power developments in Canada over the last six months. In October 2013, Indian wind energy firm Suzlon Group announced it had designed a 3MW turbine for Canada’s low-wind sites
