The world's largest 100 per cent biomass-fuelled power plant has been launched in Poland. Polish provider GDF SUEZ has inaugurated the 205MW Green Unit biomass plant, which is made up of treefarming and agricultural by-products, at Polaniec in south-east Poland.

The world's largest biomass gasification plant has been inaugurated in Finland. Firm Vaskiluodon Voima Oy has launched the 140MW plant in Vaasa, which is expected to cut coal use by 40 per cent.

An Austrian algae technology firm has won the Brazilian Bioenergy Innovation of the year award. Vienna company SEE Algae Technology (SAT), a leading developer of infrastructure for the commercial production of high-quality algae, received the award for its algae cultivation technology.
