Photovoltaics producer Trina Solar has sold its first large-scale PV power project in China. The Chinese solar firm has sold its 50MW PV power plant in Wuwei, Gansu province, to the Huadian Fuxin Energy Corporation.

Huadian Fuxin, a clean energy firm in China, will assume 100 per cent ownership of the Wuwei PV plant project from Trina Solar, once transactions are complete.

Chairman and CEO of Trina Solar Jifan Gao, said the transaction represents a “significant milestone” for the company, while showcasing its ability to develop large-scale downstream PV power projects.

"We are delighted to have successfully sold our first large-scale project in China,” Gao said. “This transaction represents a significant milestone for Trina Solar, as it showcases our ability to develop large-scale downstream projects with a complete project cycle from designing, construction, operation to the final sale.

“Huadian Fuxin is one of China's leading clean energy companies and we are pleased to have this opportunity to work with such a strategic partner," he added.

Gao said Wuwei is an ideal location for a solar plant because of its abundant solar resources. He added Trina Solar has strong capabilities in building highly efficient photovoltaic systems and hopes to develop additional PV power projects in Wuwei.

“Our successful sale of the Wuwei power plant, coupled with Trina's global branding strength, services and superior product quality demonstrate a good start for 2014 as we make more progress with our downstream projects pipeline in China.

“Trina Solar has strong capabilities in building highly efficient systems and we look forward to developing additional projects in the region,” Gao said.

The news from Trina Solar follows the company focussing on expanding its PV manufacturing capacity in China this year. The firm entered into an agreement with Chinese PV equipment maker Shenzhen to expand its solar cell manufacturing capacity in China in February. The agreement aims to achieve a PV capacity of 420MW by mid-2014.
