Chinese PV manufacturer JA Solar has announced its multi-crystalline silicon solar cells have surpassed 19 per cent conversion efficiency. JA Solar, which is one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-performance solar power products, said the improvement in efficiency has been achieved using advanced cell technology, which the JA Solar R&D team has recently developed.

It follows JA Solar announcing in August 2013 its multi-crystalline silicon cells had achieved 18.3 per cent conversion efficiency, which was an industry record at the time.

Yong Liu, chief operation officer of JA Solar, said the latest efficiency achievement for silicon solar cells at the company pushes the boundaries of PV technology and will deliver significant value to customers.

Liu said: “By breaking the 19 per cent efficiency barrier with our multi-crystalline silicon cells, JA Solar has reached yet another milestone in terms of our ability to produce high-performance solar products in a cost-effective manner.

“The new cells are a further testament to JA Solar’s unrivaled efforts to push the boundaries of PV technology. Their superior power generation per unit of area and lower installation cost per watt will deliver significant value to customers,” he said.

JA Solar said it plans to commence mass production of its new multi-crystalline silicon cells and integrate them into module assembly lines for commercial use in the second half of 2014. 

The announcement from JA Solar follows news this week the CTO for Chinese firm Suntech has won a prestigious technology award for silicon solar cell research. Suntech CTO Professor Stuart Wenham was given the award for improving efficiency for silicon solar cells in solar panel production.
