German PV tech a success for 40MW solar power plant in India, says BRIC company

SMA Solar inverters give good performance for operation of Indian firm Azure Power’s PV power plant - one of the largest in the BRIC country

The Nagaur 40MW PV power plant

German PV technology has been deemed a success at one of the largest solar power plants in India. Azure Power’s 40MW PV power plant by Azure Power in Rajasthan, India has been equipped with 37 SMA Sunny Central 800-CP inverters from German firm SMA Solar Technology. The Indian company has said the inverters have given a good performance for the Nagaur PV power plant, which went into operation last month.

“We are very satisfied with the cooperation with SMA Solar Technology AG and with the performance of the Sunny Central CP inverters”, said Interpreet Wadhwa, CEO, Azure Power. “We are following our vision of providing affordable solar power for generations. Therefore Azure Power is carrying out extensive research and development to bring down the costs of energy for the end consumer.”

Together, with modules from US firm First Solar, the inverters are running a full load of nearly 880kW at times of peak irradiation during the day. The plant will be instrumental in offsetting about 66,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year and hence would help contribute to climate change mitigation.

 Perfectly suited PV tech

SMA Solar said the Sunny Central 800-CP inverters with their robust outdoor enclosure and intelligent OptiCool cooling concept are perfectly suited to extremely dry and hot climate in Nagaur. The climate also includes frequent sandstorms in summer, large temperature variations and highly irregular rainfall.

Since autumn 2010, SMA has been present in Mumbai. The company said Rakesh Khanna, managing director, SMA India and his team support various PV power projects with SMA technology. This includes several large-scale projects in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
