China Sunergy solar cells achieve EU certified 20.26% efficiency record

PV module developer China Sunergy has announced its new generation of high-efficient mono-crystalline solar cells have achieved a certified conversion efficiency of 20.26 per cent. The solar cells, which have reached the efficiency record in China Sunergy's pilot research and development line, have received certification from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, the largest solar energy research institute in Europe.

China Sunergy, which designs, manufactures and delivers high efficiency solar cells and modules, said the high-efficient mono-crystalline solar cells combine the company's Waratah and QSAR cell technology in a new design structure. This enables it to achieve high conversion efficiency using normal wafers.

The new conversion efficiency solar cell record of 20.26 per cent was confirmed by Fraunhofer ISE in Germany as the leading level among all photovoltaic enterprises in China and has surpassed the benchmark of 20 per cent monocrystalline cells conversion efficiency. This was set by the eight development guidelines issued by the State Council for China's photovoltaic industry July 2013. It follows Chinese PV manufacturer JA Solar announcing its p-type mono-crystalline silicon solar cells had surpassed 20 per cent conversion efficiency in August.

Jianhua Zhao, chief technology officer of China Sunergy, said: "As one of the key members for China's 863 program [a National high-tech R&D program] in developing and commercialising high-efficient and low-cost crystalline silicon solar cells, we are committed to developing cutting-edge and strategic solar technologies. We are proud of our record achievement and aim to promptly deploy this new breakthrough for large-scale commercial application. Our success validates the hard work and diligence of our dedicated R&D team, and we remain determined to further advance the state of the art and to foster healthy and sustainable development for solar energy."

China Sunergy said the high-efficient mono-crystalline solar cells offer "outstanding cost advantage" and "space reduction," making them ideal for rooftop applications. China Sunergy has installed high-efficient mono-crystalline solar cell production lines with the capacity of 70MW. A corresponding module production line has the capacity of 15MW. The company plans to start commercial mass production by the end of this year.

This follows China Sunergy building up solar production in emerging market Turkey, earlier this year. The firm opened a PV module factory in Istanbul in May.
