China is set to enter India’s solar-powered vehicle market, according to reports. Chinese solar-powered car maker Guangzhou Jcar Industrial is eyeing the Indian solar power vehicle sector and showcasing its products at an auto exhibition for the first time this week, Business Standard has reported.

Guangzhou Jcar Industrial marketing head Monica Leung said India has “big potential” for solar-powered vehicles because of the high volume of sunlight each year in the BRIC country.

"India has a big potential for solar vehicles as most parts of India like China receives more than 300 days of sunlight,” Leung has told Business Standard. “The market of solar vehicles is yet to be tapped in India."

The four-day Auto Expo-2014 will begin on 6 February at the Pragati Maidan and in Greater Noida. Solar-powered vehicles, including scooters, three-wheelers and cars will be exhibited at the event.

The solar-powered three-wheeler has four models and their motor power ranges from 500W to 1,200W and the life of the solar panel is 25 years. Leung said a three-wheeler, which can be used both for carrying goods and passengers, can carry loads up to 400kg. A battery charge of five to 12 hours gives it a range up to 70km and its maximum speed is 35km per hour. The solar-powered four-seater car, with 1,200W motor power, can travel up to 70 km and its maximum speed is 30km per hour.

The news from Guangzhou Jcar Industrial follows an Indian train firm announcing the start of a project to design solar-powered coaches last August. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a production unit of Indian Railways, announced it will work with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to develop solar-powered carriages to curb train dependence on fossil fuels and the power grid.
