Silicon solar modules from China’s photovoltaic manufacturer Yingli Green Energy are being used to power the largest rooftop PV system in the UK. Yingli monocrystalline silicon solar modules totalling 10MW have been delivered to firm Kingspan Energy for a series of projects, including the UK’s largest rooftop PV project.

5.8MW of Yingli’s PANDA monocrystalline silicon solar module series have been installed on the rooftop of the facility of a multinational automotive company located in the Midlands, UK.

At 35,000 sqm, the 5.8MW solar system is currently the largest rooftop PV project in the UK. Completed in the first quarter of this year, it will generate approximately 5.5MWh of electricity per year, enough to power 1,500 homes. The remainder of PANDA modules are being used on other large-scale rooftop projects, implemented by Kingspan Energy this year.

Kingspan Energy is part of Ireland’s Kingspan Group, a global leader in high performance insulation and building envelope solutions. Peter Turley, business unit manager of Kingspan Energy, said the project is a “milestone” in further building the company’s relationship with Yingli and will give a “robust roadmap” to deliver low-cost, high efficiency PV building solutions.

"This project serves as another milestone in developing our relationship with Yingli Green Energy,” Turley said. “By leveraging our expertise in the construction industry and Yingli Solar's superior performance modules, we believe we have a robust roadmap to deliver high efficiency, low cost and low carbon building solutions across a broad range of market sectors."

Ramin Dilmaghanian, Yingli Green Energy UK business development director, said: “The UK has seen unprecedented growth in this last quarter with hundreds of megawatts of PV –being deployed ahead of the Q2 ROC adjustment. We believe that demand for large-scale rooftop projects with a self-consumption model will, in the coming months, continue to provide a stable backbone for the UK market.”

Liansheng Miao, chief executive officer of Yingli Green Energy, added: "We are delighted to expand our presence in the industrial and commercial rooftop market in the UK. We will continue to solidify our leading position in this sustainable market through cooperation with key partners such as Kingspan Energy."

The news from Yingli follows other major developments in Chinese solar firms building UK PV projects over the last few months. This includes Shunfeng and Suntech, which last week announced their role in developing 900MW of UK solar projects.
