Contracts to develop 100MW of solar photovoltaic projects in Brazil could be auctioned off by the government in the coming year, according to Leonidas Andrade, director of photovoltaics at trade group Associacao Brasileira da Industria Eletrica e Eletronica.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Andrade suggested the auction – similar to a series of previous auctions that have stimulated wind development in the country – could be the first of many for the solar sector.

“Auctions are fundamental for solar development,” Andrade told Bloomberg. “Wind energy is now very competitive. Solar could follow the same path.”

Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, which organizes renewable energy auctions in the country, has not confirmed the solar auction plan so far.
