Plans to build India's first geothermal power plants are underway. Indian states Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are the first of many to announce interest in developing the BRIC country's first geothermal energy plant, with power capacity in the range of 3MW to 5MW.

The world's largest 100 per cent biomass-fuelled power plant has been launched in Poland. Polish provider GDF SUEZ has inaugurated the 205MW Green Unit biomass plant, which is made up of treefarming and agricultural by-products, at Polaniec in south-east Poland.

Brazil will invest BRL 6.1bn ($2.85 billion) to fund biofuel and renewable chemical technology research, according to reports. The development will accelerate its efforts to modernise its energy industry and shift away from a commodity-export based economy, Bloomberg has said.

Funding to build Brazil's first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant has been approved, according to reports. Brazilian development bank BNDES has approved a BRL 300.3m (USD 150m) loan to develop the plant, which will be used to produce biofuels and renewable chemicals.

The world's largest biomass gasification plant has been inaugurated in Finland. Firm Vaskiluodon Voima Oy has launched the 140MW plant in Vaasa, which is expected to cut coal use by 40 per cent.
