US tech firm opens smart metering lab in India

Itron announces lab and knowledge centre in Noida to showcase and demonstrate smart metering solutions

The centre aims to benefit local utilities and government officials in India by sharing insights and knowledge Itron has learned through its experience with smart grid solutions

US technology firm Itron has opened its first smart metering lab in India. The Smart Metering Lab and Knowledge Centre is a facility to showcase and demonstrate Itron's smart metering and AMI solutions, which has headquarters based in Washington.

Located in the Indian city of Noida, the centre aims to benefit local utilities, government officials and other groups by sharing insights and knowledge Itron has learned through its "vast international experience" with smart grid solutions.

Attendees to the opening of the centre included Mr N.S. Sodha, executive director of Power Grid Corporation of India and member of India Smart Grid Task Force (Government of India), who was onsite as the chief guest. He was joined by senior industry executives from organisations such as Alstom India, BESCOM, Central Electricity Authority, TATA Power and Reliance Power, along with Itron channel partners. Itron presented a live product demonstration to all guests, which showcased Itron's end-to-end AMI solutions.

"We are invested in working with key leaders to ensure growth in the Indian market and offer the best solutions for smart grid in the industry," said Hartinder Bhatia, head of India energy sales and marketing for Itron. "It's been an honour to work with our customers who have been very thoughtful in their approach to deploying smart grid technologies that will enable future success."

Itron is a leading provider of innovative smart grid solutions. The company claims it delivers one of the most comprehensive suites of products and services available to help utilities measure, manage and analyse energy and water resources.

The news from Itron follows other US firms moving into India's smart grid market over the last 12 months. This includes BPL Global (BPLG), a smart grid technology company in Ohio, which opened an office in India to expand its business in the BRIC country in May 2012.
