Contracts have been signed to generate almost 100MW of bioenergy in India, according to reports. Grid Corporation of Orissa Ltd (Gridco) has signed power purchase agreements with eight developers for a total biomass generation of 98MW in the state of Orissa, India.

According to Asia publication, Business Standard, of these eight developers, two have targeted to operationalise their units in 2012-13 with a combined generation capacity of 10MW. The state is currently generating 20MW from biomass.

The report states that the Orissa government has also set a target to generate 50MW from solar power in 2012 to 13.

It stated that Ramesh Majhi, minister for science and technology at the state assembly, said: “Presently, 10MW solar power is being produced in the state. This apart, the process of developer selection is completed for generation of additional 25MW. For 2012-13, we have set solar power generation target of 50MW.”

Recently, Kolkata-based firm Alex Astral Power won a contract for setting up of a 25MW solar power plant in Orissa. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 300 crore. The project is likely to come up in Bolangir district considering the amount of solar radiation the area gets.

Gridco had also signed PPAs with eight solar developers, each with a capacity of 1MW. The firm had inked an MoU with Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) to avail generation based incentive (GBI) under the Union ministry of new & renewable energy (MNRE) under the Rooftop Photovoltaic and Small Solar Generation Programme (RPSSGP) scheme.

According to the report, Alex will sell solar energy at Rs 7 per unit to Gridco and in turn, the bulk power power purchaser will agree to buy power from Alex for a period of 25 years. The power purchase agreement (PPA) is expected to be signed in the last week of April this year.
